Following the Dream: A Civil Rights Tour of the American South

Following the Dream is the only guide you will need as you take a journey through the Civil Rights movement of the American South. It is a marriage of storytelling and the nuts and bolts of selecting the travel route, the sites, hotels, and the restaurants that will make your tour an enjoyable and profound experience.

This travelogue reflects the experiences of four travelers, three having grown up in the US, who thought they had a full understanding of what happened in our nation in the 1950s and 1960s. From Atlanta to Montgomery to Selma to Birmingham to Oxford and to Memphis, we had daily reminders of how little we truly understood. From first hand testimony to gifted docents to walking in the footsteps of hundreds facing down police and Klansmen on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, we experienced something unique and unforgettable.

The impetus for and the centerpiece of our trip was the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, colloquially known as the Lynching Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama.  A creation of the Equal Justice Initiative, this is one of dozens of museums, historic sites, walks, parks, churches, restaurants and hotels reviewed in detail.

Michael Shulman is the author of Sell Short, published by John Wiley & Sons as well as Made in America, available on Amazon.com. I am delighted to bring our experiences to fellow travelers with the help of Opus Publishing, the exclusive imprint of Politics and Prose.
